Short bio

Josep Domenech has a multidisciplinary background education in Business (B.Sc.), Economics (M.Sc.), and Computer Engineering (B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D.). He was the recipient of an "Award for academic performance" by the Generalitat Valenciana due to his excellent academic record. It also allowed him to receive a grant for research staff preparation (FPI) funded by the Universitat Politècnica de València (2003-2006). Although his Ph.D. thesis was developed in a Computer Engineering program, it included some economic perspective on the evaluation of web prediction algorithms, since the thesis was done simultaneously with his studies in Business.

He is Full Professor (Catedrático de Universidad) in Applied Economics at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). Before joining the UPV, between 2007 and 2009, he had different academic positions (Ayudante Doctor / Asociado) in Computer Architecture at the Universitat de València. Both his teaching and research activities are consistent with his multidisciplinary background. On the one hand, he teaches Digital Economy to students in Business Administration and Social and Economic Behavior to students in Data Science. On the other hand, most research projects in which he is involved combine both economics and internet technologies.

Josep Domenech has participated in the development of 24 research projects, being the principal investigator of 12 of them. They resulted in 61 contributions to conferences, 25 papers published in journals indexed in the JCR, 16 edited research books, and 7 authored book chapters. He is also the author of an international patent.

The impact of his research is substantial and multifaceted, reflecting his extenisive and varied background. From the academic perspective, Josep Domenech has been invited as keynote speaker to share his expertise on the convergence of Big Data methods and economics in several conferences and meetings, such as the 4POINT0 Conference on Policies, Practices and Processes related to the Performance of Innovation Ecosystems (Canada); the we.create conference, and the Symposium on Natural language processing of websites to extract company data (Utrecht University). His paper on Big Data sources and methods for economic analyses is a key reference in the topic and received the “Highly Cited Paper” award by Clarivate’s Web of Science. This recognition, along with his publications in top-tier journals like Technological Forecasting & Social Change, Journal of Business Research, Annals of Operations Research, Economics Letters, and Expert System with Applications, emphasizes the academic rigor and impact of his research.

His research has also reached institutions and companies, underscoring its practical relevance and applicability. His collaborations with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, Eurostat, Kritisch Denken, SOWISO, the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (IVIE), and the Generalitat Valenciana demonstrate a wide recognition of his expertise in applying his research to real-world scenarios. These collaborations with diverse organizations reflect the utility of his research in informing policy, enhancing business strategies, and driving innovation.

Regarding his teaching activities, they involve both undergraduate and master levels across Economics and Computing fields. He has been invited as a guest lecturer for master program courses in Mexico and Bolivia, as well as a guest speaker for specialized workshops in Sri Lanka and Tanzania. He is the author (and coordinator) of a textbook published by Tirant lo Blanch, and also led two research projects on innovative teaching. His publication record includes 27 papers related to innovative teaching practices. He is also the recipient of an award for his excellent teaching, given by the Generalitat Valenciana. He has been a visiting researcher at Middlesex University and Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca. Collaborations during these visits resulted in research papers published in high impact journals. He has also visited the Hanoi University of Science and Technology and the Turku University of Applied Sciences.
